Basic research
What you need to know about basic research in France
Basic research seeks to understand biological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms without an immediate therapeutic goal. It forms the foundation for all scientific advances. In the context of ocular cancers, it helps uncover genetic origins of tumors, cellular interactions, and signaling pathways involved in cancer development.
While it may not lead directly to treatments, basic research plays a key role in long-term medical innovation. Many therapeutic breakthroughs originate from these fundamental studies.
In France, it is primarily regulated by the French Research Code and ethical laws, particularly those concerning animal experimentation (in line with EU Directive 2010/63/EU) and handling of sensitive data. It does not fall under the Jardé Law unless it involves human volunteers.
