Dr. Jean-Pierre Caujolle

Ocular oncologist

Dr. Jean-Pierre Caujolle is specialized in ocular oncology, the branch of medicine focused on eye tumors. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in diagnosing and treating conjunctival tumors.

Short Bio

After completing seven years of medical studies at Aix-Marseille II University, Jean-Pierre Caujolle passed the competitive residency exam in 1983 and joined the University Hospital of Nice, choosing ophthalmology as his specialty. Early in his training, he developed a particular interest in ocular tumors, inspired by the Antoine Lacassagne Center’s project to build a medical cyclotron dedicated to the conservative treatment of these tumors. At the time, enucleation was the standard treatment for melanomas. He furthered his training with Professor Grange in Lyon and Professor Zografos in Lausanne as part of this initiative.

The cyclotron became operational in July 1989, enabling Dr. Caujolle to progressively develop ocular oncology at the University Hospital of Nice, focusing on ocular and periocular tumors. He is an internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis and treatment of conjunctival tumors and was among the first—together with Drs. Chauvel and Sauerwein at the Antoine Lacassagne Center—to use proton therapy for malignant conjunctival tumors. Today, Nice is a national and international reference center in ocular oncology, ranked among the world’s best for proton therapy.
